There are a lot of conflit of interest after Google Knol has been released. Google claims Knol to be its own unique idea. However, industry experts feel Knol is just a copy of Wikipedia with some money making features.

The non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, surprisingly welcomed Google Knol stating, “The more good free content, the better for the world”. This answer can be one of the three reasons:

  1. Google threatened Wiki at gun point to give this statement
  2. Google might have had a quite deal with Wiki or paid a huge donation to the non-profit organization
  3. Wikipedia does not have any understanding of how Google Knol works

Well, if the answers are ridiculous so is the wiki statement. Knol is a definite rival to encyclopedia sites like Wikipedia or About.com. Knol is more like About as it has more individual rights and totally marketing-free.

Several search engine experts feel that Google has already given Knol a good Page Rank even before it was live. This helps any content on Knol to appear in top search results. This favouritism can lead to Google users losing trust on Google Search and also a lot of spamming. Even copied content from a good website gives high rankings in Knol surpassing the original.

Cedric Dupont, Google product manager stated that :Google is very happy with Wikipedia being so successful. Anyone who tries to kill them would hurt us.” Was he into politics before? The statement sounds too political after all anyone on their first gaze knows why Knol was created. Just two things in mind.

“Capture Wiki and About users and Make some money out of it”.

Not much publicity or hype has been on the new Google Knol [A unit of knowledge]. But it looks like Google prefers ranking its Knol articles in SERP better than other websites.

This favoritism has been noted by a number of publishers. Even an article originally posted in a different website with good PR many months back, if when copied and posted in Knol can give higher results than the original article. This has caused a number of concerns as Google who played the Pope all these days is now trying to promote its own website. This is not a fair game by Google which would just result in loss of reputation.

When a duplicate article is posted on Knol, Google warns that it is a duplicate content as it identifies from where the content was extracted. However, when the same duplicate content is posted, it ranks even better than the original content. Google might claim that this is based on the “Query Deserves Freshness” algorithm which it has been promoting during the recent days. But that doesn’t mean that “new duplicate content deserves more” or “we will add PR to our sites the way we want” Google algorithms are valid.

With Google falsely promoting its own new site, SEO experts have identified the potential in linking to these pages and a large number of search engine experts have already started adding articles or linking their websites to Google Knol.

Google Announces Knol

Google has been noticing the power of Wikipedia during the recent years. The announcement of Knol is not a big surprise. Knol would be a Wikipedia killer. Google has been understanding the profit it can make out of a Wikipedia-like product and also Wikipedia’s loop holes.

Knol, which Google claims to be its own idea, is actually an enhanced version of Wikipedia. Knol means a unit of knowledge. Google plans to include a large number of user-written articles on a wide range of topics. However, when it was released as a beta to the public, it had few articles written mostly in the medical and health sector.

Unlike Wikipedia, Google requires all Knol projects to be posted only after signing into the account. Also, Google would check the authenticity by using an account owner’s credit card information or their phone number.

Search engine experts feel that Knol has been given too much favouritism by Google helping their new pages to come to the top of search results. Even if the content is copied from another website and posted in Knol, you would get top results in Google. Isn’t this cool? This is a huge mistake Google has done to its image. Google followers would no longer feel its results are unbiased.
